Registering Pets
On Base
All pets residing on-base are required to be registered a the VTF. It is mandatory that all animals residing on-base must be microchipped. Your pet’s rabies tag is also a registration tag. Upon arrival to the installation, a valid rabies certificate and negative heartworm exam must be presented to the VTF. Once your pet has received the rabies vaccine, obtained a microchip and a record for your pet has been established, you are considered registered on base.
Off Base
Provide a “Certificate of Rabies Vaccination” when registering your pet. There is a fee for the registration of your pet. For more information, call the number corresponding with your city of residence. A few are provided below. If your city is not listed, contact your city hall for animal registration information. Note: As soon as you receive notification of a PCS, contact the VTF for specific health certificate requirements. Some countries require the proper paperwork to be started 6 months in advance and that a microchip be implanted prior to rabies vaccination with boosters and titers for entry.
PCS/ETS
Do not forget to pick up your pet’s helth records in the event that you PCS or ETS. If you no longer own the pet, notify the clinic in order for the record to be transferred or inactivated.
Heartworm
Heartworm Heartworm disease is a very serious and potentially fatal disease transmitted by mosquitoes. The heartworms live in the heart and lungs of dogs and cats. Monthly heartworm preventative medication can be obtained only from a licensed veterinarian. Animals will require a blood test to be sure that they do not already carry the heartworms. Your pet should remain on heartworm preventative for its entire life and be tested every 12 months. It is highly recommended for all dogs. Proof of a negative heartworm test must be provided before preventative will be sold. Dogs under the age of 6 months can be started on the preventative without being tested. The preventative dosage is based on your dog’s current weight and must be given as directed by the veterinarian.
Note: If the heartworm test was accomplished off-base, a veterinaryclient- patient relationship (VCPR) must be established before heartworm preventative will be sold.
